Steam Wars – Taking Flight(stands).

My hot air balloon has now got its flight stand.  Coronasan has been working on a number of flying models and designed this stand with Jim from Products For Wargamers.

The stand should be available soon from Jims website and on his stand at the shows he attends through the year.

Its sturdy and light and has a small foot print so doesn’t take up too much room between scenery on a crowded table.  I have fitted it with a silver rod and run that inside the basket and balloon to give some stability to the model here.

The fact the balloon comes, as new, with its stars and bars flag makes me smile every time.

The crew have been raised up, so that they can see out, with a small foam board block.  I plan to cover this with balsa strips and disguise it as it is a little too white at the moment.

One thing the stand needs is a way to stop the rid coming out of the stand when in use.  I didn’t want to glue this as storage would then be difficult.

A 6mm magnet under the lower ring does a fine job of holding it all in place and now lets me pack it away when I need to as well.

Steam Wars – Even More Deck Guns

My Deck Gun project is coming along nicely. The gun mounts are slowly lining up and will be ready for casting soon.

I plan to make mounts for each of the guns in the Black Pyramid artillery set and for some of their universal gun barrels from their wider range.

The largest gun is the main carriage gun from their set and this is the easiest to mount as it already has so much detail and only needs a simple mounting for it to look good.

Add some buttons and controls and it looks almost ready to go.

The first try at the mount for the Gatling style gun.  This left me wondering about whether to set this as just a gun barrel or to include the ammo feed as well.  To me it almost overbalances the gun itself when viewed from this angle…

Without the feed, and with some more detail to the mounting, it is starting to look more like a finished piece.

The Black Pyramid barrels from the tank turrets and sponsons are able to use the same mount but will need a universal breach section to allow them to fit the mounting and look finished.  I still need to design something that fits for all the the barrels and looks ok with anything from a tesla gun to missile launcher…

I slightly reworked the boxed mounting to fit the resin mounting from the artillery set.  It can be used as a flack mounting.

A multiple missile launcher.

Or a mortar mounting.

Coronasan suggested I try a twin mounted missile launcher on the deck mount as well.  Still a work in progress but looking impressive even at this early stage.  Definitely a good call on his part.

Steam Wars – Air Power

The Naval force has already taken to the air with its hover launch.  However, it will soon be soaring gracefully through the skies in its own hot air balloon.

This gem of a find was sitting in a store just waiting for me to find it.  John Lewis is an old style, British department store, that I almost never frequent.  I don’t know how long it has been stocking this wonderful, and almost perfect scale, balloon model.  I happened upon it when I ventured in to look at their electronics department and passed it in the executive toy section on my way out.

It currently hangs over the battlefield, but soon I should have some sort of basic flight stand sorted out, and it can then begin featuring in a Steam Wars game or two.

I am undecided if it will be used to drop small hand held bombs on Coronasan’s troops or to field it with a naval observer or sniper in the basket.  We will have to wait and see.

Steam Wars – New Stuff From Black Pyramid

Black Pyramid have been the main supplier for my Steam Wars force since I started it some months back.

Their new figures are now available and fit in perfectly as the Marines attachment to my Naval Ratings force.  Having no heavy weapons in these squads will make them cheaper in points and should also supply some extra objective grabbing feet to the force.

Some new commanders are also a good addition to any force and will be used to allow me some much needed rerolls for pinning tests in our Steam Wars game…

Their new product line is also soon going to include a beautiful new steam ship and a lovely ironclad.  With that many new ships available I am going to be needing lots of my newly designed deck guns.

Using Black Pyramids own artillery set I have run up these two new prototypes for use on a variety of ships decks that might come along.

I have stated before that I am not what you would call a scratch builder…  I am more of a scrap builder…

Most of the bits these are made from are off cuts from MDF buildings and other bits of things that should have been thrown away.

I also continue to have very little planning to my builds. Most often I find that its trial and error that gets me this far.

Add in some nail art gems and plastic off cuts of tube… Then throw in the odd bit of broken washing line…

I never know how it will turn out in the end, but it usually turns out ok.

These deck gun mountings have been built without the guns attached. Then the option is available to cast them up and reproduce them in either resin or metal.

I am making more mounts in the same way for the other guns that are made by Black Pyramid. All will be constructed in the same random way but will be done so that casts can be taken as I may need multiples of each at some point.

I like the way they look at the moment but suspect I will tinker with them some more before I call them done.

Steam Wars – Hover Launch

My Steam wars force has been growing slowly, and their Naval theme has been becoming more evident as it goes along.  I couldn’t make it any more obvious as a Victorian Sci Fi, or Steam punk force, than to include a couple of flying boats.

My steam launch has been drilled, magnetised and lifted from the ground, and with the addition of some hover engines…

It has become the ultimate in fast floating transports.  Ready and waiting for my naval assault force to ride to war on.

This will be loaded with white uniformed men and featuring in a good few games over the next few weeks methinks…

Steam Wars – Breaching Team

My second Ironclad Miniatures squad have been on the painting table recently and are now finished.  These boys are Elite troops in our Steam Wars game.  Lots of shotguns and hopefully able to take down Coronasan’s heavy infantry as I haven’t got any heavy boys sorted myself at this point.

I will be playing these guys as four shotguns and two specialist breaching guns  (think of a blunderbuss crossed with an antitank rifle…)  All short ranged and noisy.

They should be able to slow armoured vehicles and men equally well if they can get up close and personal.

The photos don’t do then justice but they will be used in most games so will be in a lot of photos in time.

Can’t wait to get them up on the table and play test their rules.  Lets hope they can start to make Coronasan a bit less confident with his heavy jump troopers.

Steam Wars – Deck Gun Progress

My first try at getting some deck guns built has been good as a learning curve.  I build almost randomly it seems and I cannot recreate the items easily as each one is unique in many ways.

So, I have decided to try to make some deck guns for my Steam Wars Naval force that can be recreated, either by the simplicity of the design or by casting the items and reproducing them in resin.

All geck guns need a mount to sit on and secure them to the deck.

Can’t have them falling over when the boat bobs about on the odd wave can we…

Mounts need to put the gun at the right height as well. Got to keep all those health and safety executives happy that the crew wont be bending or lifting too much you know…

Handles in the right places for people to get at them easily. Most important for ease of use.

All sharp bits and finger trapping hazards should be boxed in, and definitely no electrics or working parts exposed…

That Gun shield will definitely NOT do as it has lots of sharp edges.  must get a replacement made up, pronto…

Needless to say all a work in progress so far.  Lots if potential though.

Fistful Of Kung Fu – The Return Of Mr M Vs Mrs M.

This is a post that has sat in my ‘Drafts’ folder for the last 3-4 months.  They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but these pictures have had no words for so long they have lost a little of their story.  Tonight I plan to rectify that, a little…

————————————————————————————————-

The scene is set as the camera pans across the old dock works.  It could be any of the old, grime stained industrial towns you might have visited.  Slightly dishevelled and with that oily smell that stays in the air no matter what other aromas may waft in on the breeze.

The local ale house brings its own stale scent as you walk past the open doors and the noise of the conversations taking place in hushed tones escapes onto the dusky streets.

The harbour itself has its own briny stillness, the lapping of the water lulls you while the salt in the air dries on your skin and clothes.

The port is eerily quiet, even for a late evening in autumn, and the chill air seems to be trying to chasing those quiet, simple daytime folk homeward. Hastening you and them away and back towards the warmth of their beds.

As the light dims, the other face of the town turns its gaze towards these cluttered streets.  This is the face of the town that only a few hardened souls can look upon without feeling that irrational fear of the dark. The fear that makes you mistrust those darkened corners and alleyways.  No law abiding folk venture out here after dark.  As no written law is found around here after dark.  The darkness brings its own laws…

But if you stay out.  If you stay in those streets, you may see the stories of those hardened souls played out in full.  You may see what starts and ends in those darkened streets, under the cover of night.

————————————————————————————————-

Mr M we have met before.  Kingpin to his men and a force of will that can leave even the most hardened soul happier to face the fears of the night than meet his gaze.

His gang, a collection of men whose ill-gotten pursuits have ended many a life and lined Mr M’s pockets well for the last decade.

Mrs M is cut from the same cloth.  No longer do those softer female instincts reside in this lady from a bygone age.  Her beauty, once a thing of wonder, soured by resentment and spite.  Cast aside by Mr M as her glory faded, she became his nemesis not his victim. She now holds so much power and influence that soon she will rival Mr M himself.

That time is now. The rivals have both been left with only one course of action.  One side must fall.  If any part of the other gang still stands by morning then the threat remains.  Only if the other can be wholly destroyed, will control of the port be there for the taking for the victor.

————————————————————————————————-

The night starts with the meeting of our protagonists.  Mr and Mrs M find their interests crossing while they unload their nefarious shipments. Most of the crates and containers throughout the port are stock for the family business.

Untold wealth and an uncountable numbers of illegal weapons can be found by just opening their wares. If someone dared to steal from the M’s that is. As usual the only souls brave enough to steal from the M’s are each other.  The argument this time seems fiercer than usual though…

As they argue Mr M’s henchmen move to force Mrs M to back down.  Something she has never been able to do.  Before they can force her back she cuts their kingpin down where he stands.

Anger, confusion and revenge ripple through the port as the news reaches the remaining members of the gang.  Men grab guns and prepare to exact their revenge.

Sides are taken and Mr M’s Bruiser takes command of the gang with one mission in mind.  To destroy his bosses killer.  Mrs M retreats to her safe house while she waits for the backlash to start.  She may never have been a boy scout but she understands the need to be prepared.  Her steam ship is not only a safe house but comes equipped with a sting in its tail (or on its bow).

A burst of fire is enough to put the Bruiser on his back foot and allows Mrs M’s girls to start to take back the initiative.

This is her time.  This is the point she decides to take the fight back to the harbour.  The final blow must be the destruction of all of the gang.  Working her way across town she heads for the old ale house.  Her rage makes her blind to her gangs losses.  Girls drop one at a time until she finds her self alone.

Alone with the rest of Mr M’s gang and their need for revenge.  As the boys move in, Mrs M finds herself holed up in the general store.  As she looks about herself in a frantic need for inspiration she sees matches and methylated spirits.  A smile breaks across her face for what may be the first time in years.

Her aim is poor, but with enough flaming liquids a person can do an awful lot of damage.

As her confidence again begins to improve, she screams at the last of the boys.  She taunts him to attack.  She knows that she is one death away from owning everything that she has ever wanted.  Even though she has lost her own gang, she knows that the act of finishing this is all she needs to be whole again.

As the tow truck speeds towards Mrs M she steels her nerve and waits.  Waits until the drivers rage blinds him to his own safety and his thirst for revenge weighs down his foot.

The force of the impact, the noise of the crash and the cloud of dust and smoke that is cast into the air, covers the area and hides the outcome of the crash.  As the dust settles a vision of destruction becomes unveiled.  The last of Mr M’s gang lays dead over the bonnet of his truck.  Forced through the windscreen by the impact if the crash.

Mrs M lays quiet on the ground.  Seemingly unharmed but so still it is hard to tell if she still breaths. As sirens sound in the distance and voices start to be heard from alerted householders the body of Mrs M remains, quiet and still, on the ground of the harbour that she gave all to possess…

Steam Wars – Land Based Transportation.

Our last big game had us using transports, as well as our heavier vehicles, as a quick way to get infantry across the table (no surprise there).  We also spent a lot of time using them as mobile cover as well.  In fact, every time we tried to move our troops from alleyway to alleyway, (try to picture that iconic image of infantry walking in column behind their tanks).

image

Ironclad have again supplied me with a great little model that I plan to use as my main troop carrier.  I got it in the sale last month and its very different from their chunky resin tanks.

image

This reminded me of a tobacco tin on wheels with an old stove as a power supply at first.  It also has a certain boat like quality too.  I can picture it wading on to shore, chock full of marines…

The first images show it base painted but, as all of our Steam Wars armies currently sport light grey tanks, I had to add the usual weathering wash to get a darker tone.  This helps it stand out from other armies and also makes it fit in with my other tanks.

image

A couple of decals later and it fits in nicely as a Navy or Marine troop transport.

image

This is a lighter vehicle so I may give it a lower number of wounds and a faster speed when I point it up on our unit calculator.

image

Coronasan will get the rules up on his website at some point (but only when we stop breaking them each time we play test them).  The unit calculator is a thing of beauty (all 47 versions have been very easy to use but I should try to stop making him change things).

Soon the navy force will be upgraded from an advance force to an army proper as Black Pyramid will sending me their newly redesigned and restocked ratings any day now.

Steam Wars – Work In Progress.

While I was sorting out a lot of finishing touches to lots of the other bits in the shed, Ironclad decided they would have a sale…

With my mind firmly on deck guns at the moment I decided to pick up some from the sale. As well as a tesla style carriage gun I picked up a couple of heavier tanks in the sale.  John at Ironclad also sorted me out some heavier gun turret parts as well.  These are planned to allow me to ‘up gun’ my existing HMG tanks to proper antitank guns.

These are built, but not yet painted, and as these will be my heaviest tanks I added a couple of extra MGs for good measure (again I did this before considering how they would survive storage in a KR style case).

The first of my home made deck guns got a base white wash as all ships guns need to be painted to stop them rusting…

Not bad as a first try.

The Black Pyramid gun got a Plasticard gun shield. The first time I have tried to work this small with plasticard.

Thankfully it proved easier than I thought.  A thicker gauge card may be easier for fixing of the angle plate next time

Happy with it so far…

I also finally got round to magnetising the hover engines on the steam launch too.  It had taken me so long to do this that the blutac was a pain to remove.  A small touch of paint to mask the magnet slightly then I am good to go.

Oh, and I may need to paint the engines in the long run too…

With some of the bitty jobs done I may be able to get back to a bigger project again soon. Maybe!
