Distraction – Rome

We spent a couple of days away last week.  Rome – Never been before and it proved I am a small town boy at heart…

Loved the sights and history on offer.

Great weather and great to wander about in such an iconic spot.

Did all the traditional tourist stops.

Spent much longer wandering the Roman Forum than we expected to.  Such a big and varied site.

Happened to be the Rome Marathon that weekend too.  The small town boy in me did not appreciate the cramped city streets that day…

I was truly longing for wider skies by the end of our stay. I can now fully understand why the cities squares such a part of the culture there.

Can’t take a gamer anywhere though without seeing something worth using in a game.  In one of the Vatican gift shops of all places, all I noticed was a potential Gaslands car…

Steam Wars – Game Night

All my activity (well most of it) over the last weeks has been towards getting the Martian forces ready for their first game.  Well that game happened on Thursday night.

We decided to play a ‘Breakthrough’ mission with the Martians invading and striding (hopefully) unhindered across the British countryside.  The Martians had to travel the length of the table and exit with 50% of their force.  Deployment was 24 inches into the table so they only had 48 inches to go to gain victory.

Plenty of scenery in the quaint English town was going to slow them down somewhat but their average speed of 6 inches per turn walking, or 9 inches at a trot, was going to be their biggest hindrance.

But these Human defenders were never going to be a match for the great Martian might.  So with Tripods to the fore, to clear the way, the march began.

The British defence force had been quickly scrambled so had few heavy guns available on the day.  The redcoat firing line would have to suffice in this battle.

The one available unit of British heavy troopers deployed on the right of their defensive line, ready to try to topple a few Tripods.

As the advance began, the Martians realised that their technology may be far in advance of the Human defenders, but multiple volleys of lead projectiles will slow any force.  As the Martians started to take damage, the advance slowed slightly as the Tripods began to return fire.

With the Martians recognising that their main threat was the heavy troopers on their left, a Tripod moved into position to unleash their fury.

Before he could close in to use his myriad of whips and claws a volley from the British gunbots finished the job and the first Tripod fell.

On the Martian right, the mechanical troopers opened fire on the British, and were repaid with a blast of machinegun fire that took out a number of their kind.  Their mindless mechanical will meant, that although they were damaged, their directives remained set and they continued to crawl towards their foe.

For a while the British Sky Hussars held the Martian right at bay, but as they roamed too close to the Scout Tripod defending that flank, they began to lose numbers. Although depleted, they continued to remained a thorn in the Martian side.

As the Martian infantry moved up in support of the Tripods the barrage of lead continued.  The Assault Tripod was unlucky with his Gas Globes, as his indirect fire was being affected by the Earths heavier gravity.  Some reprogramming of the targeting systems would be needed to compensate for this effect.

As the Martian infantry gathered to clear the British from their left flank, the Slave infantry were forced forwards to shield their Cephalopod commanders and their mechanical guards.

The slowed Martian advance allowed the British to take up positions in the centre and continue their barrage of lead.

Meanwhile the remaining Martian Tripods continued to push forwards, despite the British showing off the pluck and defiance that had earned them their own empire.

The British at this point had slowed the Martian advance sufficiently and had time to secure a strong defensive position.

Although the Sanwar slaves were again forced ahead of the main force, to flush the British out of their positions, their numbers were no match for the fire from the redcoated regulars.

More than half of the Martian force was in ruin with the loss of the Assault Tripod. The Cephalopod commanders could afford on more losses this day and the advance was halted.  The Martians would learn a valuable lesson this day and their underestimation of the British would not be repeated.

The Martian advance would continue when their reinforcements were available and when some systems had been reprogrammed to better cope with the Human defences (meaning my army list and weapon profiles had some glaring issues that really need to be fixed).

Steam Wars – Martian Expeditionary Force Completed

This is quite possibly both the quickest and slowest painted force I have completed to date.

Planned way back in early 2016 its two years in the making and only just finished to a state when I can actually play a game with them.

When the fire was finally lit though, and our first game was planned, the speed of things picked up dramatically.  The actual painting only started in mid March so these seven, game ready units, have been completed in about 20 days. (The 3 mechanical units were already done, thankfully, or I would never have gotten the army completed on time.)

1000 points of Martian loveliness. 36 miniatures from 7 different manufacturers, proving that a well written set of rules, with built in flexibility, can accommodate any figures you care to throw at it.

Looking at the remainder of the force (sat unpainted on my shelf) I guess I would have a further 30 days of painting to do if I kept the same pace up…

Unlikely I know…

Steam Wars – Scout Tripods

Last painting push before the planned first invasion by the mighty Martian Expeditionary Force

Scout Tripods are on the painting table at last.  Not a red nose in sight…

The simple brass and silver scheme keeps the painting effortless while the army theme will be kept by the Red Martian Earth bases they will get at the end.

The only stress that these gave me was a broken ankle when the eagerness if the Martians to invade the Earth was proven by one of the Tripods jumping off the table mid session. A quick pin and he was fighting fit again…

I decided not to worry about the lack of variation in colour on these chaps, as the bright red bases add that desired splash of colour to the finished models.

Awaiting a quick tidy up on the bases, and some tufts of static grass, these chaps are all but done.

…and on time for my first game as well…

Steam Wars – Tripod Progress

Assault Tripod one is completed.  As any test paint scheme should, it has taught me how to get the remaining Tripods done in less time and with less effort.  The ink wash again, over wide flat surfaces, is slightly less even than I would have liked but not as bad as some I have done.  Red nose was redone with a free hand iris to try to make it less clown like…

The Gas Globes are slightly less bright under the wash and the Martian Cracked Earth base adds another layer of colour to a basically boring silver colour scheme

My god I hate that bloody great red nose…

If you don’t like something from the start, then its likely you will dislike it forever, so its often better to change it sooner rather than later.

Its often surprising how changing just one detail can change the look of something…

Much better in my opinion…

Two more Tripods to go…

Steam Wars – Tripods, Tripods, Tripods

When I started the Martian Steam Wars force my first purchase was 3 large Assault Tripods from All Quiet On The Martian Front.  Cheap at the time due to the game being defunct (now re-released by Ironclad Games).

My planned army for this weeks game has one of these original Assault Tripods along with two slightly smaller Scout Tripods.

I started getting these ready for the painting table about 7 days ago but only as the long Easter Bank Holiday Weekend started did I actually get paint on any of them.

Even after owning them for about two years I still had no idea how to paint them. Coloured armoured plates or brass and chrome were my final choices and as always laziness prevailed so silver they remained…

I have added a small nail art gem to the ‘helmet’ of the tripod and used a GW ‘gem’ paint to get a touch of colour into the model.

Gas globes in a green mottled paint job add even more colour to a basic two tone paint job.  My only worry is that the tripod looks more like it has a clowns red nose instead of a red glowing scanner node now…

As I do more with this model I like it less. Wide flat panels that blend into other wide flat panels is never my favourite sculpting style.  I prefer hard edges and details to paint or pick out.

I suspect that keeping it simple may give me less opportunity to screw it up further…

Warhammer 40,000 – Daddy Knights And Baby Knights.

I truly believe that everything has its nemesis.  Balance is required in the universe so, light and dark, good and evil, effective hobby time and postmen…

Yes, my always happy local postie called in last week, and dropped off a flattish box which at first glance was not that impressive.  The contents of that box had an almost magical ability though. An ability to stop my hobby in its tracks, and distract me from my aim of painting Tripods…

Games Workshop have released yet another two player starter set that has flooded eBay with various split out figures and models.  In my case the attraction was with the new Imperial Knight Armiger Warglaives.

These, smaller, Imperial Knights are great as models in their own right.  When I saw them I thought, as I already have a knight, a couple of these in a support role would be ideal.

I have made up the first of them.  A simple task as these are very easy to construct.

They are further improved in my mind, as was the original knight, by being well planned out by GW. Thus allowing me to paint it while it is in pieces and then finally building it once the armour plates are coloured.

This is going to have to go back in the drawer though, unfinished as it is, as I have a small force of Tripods that should be on this very painting table. As its only a few days before they need to be fielded in a game…

Steam Wars – Infantry For Our First Game Finished

Time for a glamour shot.  My newly painted Martian Infantry in all its glory.  Elite caste controllers and Sanwar slave infantry. All painted in less than 2 weeks…

Lets not mention the 2 years this has been in the planning stages or the remaining 4-5 units that have yet to get started…

This lot are about 450 points of a 1000 point Steam Wars force planned for our April 4th game.

Add in the already painted Mechanical infantry and the points jump to about 650 points. Mechanical troops are unreliable, and their programming often glitches, so they get a large points reduction in the game.  This is mostly due to the possibility of them not acting in every game turn.

That leaves me with about 350 points still sat on the painting table in the form of these three Martian Tripods.  I guess I had better pull my finger out and get these walkers done, as its only a few days before they are supposed to be striding across a table and using their heat rays to turn the Victorian British forces to carbon like dust…

Steam Wars – Martian Elite Caste

The Martian force I had planned for use in Steam Wars has always been envisioned as a two fold army.  Elite overlord controllers shepherding units of controlled, or slave, infantry towards their foe.  Therefore, I was always going to need the army controllers to stand out from the infantry by being a little different.

In this case it was by being a whole different race (Cephalopods) and maintaining a higher technology level than the regular forces.

Technology far advanced from their enemy as well.  Lets hope that the grit, determination and hard projectiles of the Victorian British infantry will be enough to hold back the Martian might.  One problem with all advanced civilised forces is their habit of underestimating the simple tenacity and brute force of lesser races…

A Cephalopod is in the end a flesh and blood creature, despite its ability to subjugate and overwhelm other races.

Like all overlord races their numbers are lower than the populace they control.  Drones and mechanical assistants are therefore essential when the lesser slaves are not up to higher tasks.  The discovery of new knowledge and the advancement of science must be allowed to progress, so the Martian Cephalopods have long advocated the use of drone helpers to gather information and protect their masters.

Science Caste Cephalopods are often sent out into the field to discover the weaknesses of their enemies.  This task can be a dangerous one, even when the enemy is a lesser species.  Collection suits and science drone assistants are therefore deployed whenever exposure to dangerous lifeforms is likely.

When slave infantry, or mechanical troopers are deployed, their actions need to be overseen by a controller from one of the elite castes of Cephalopods. Mind control and the direction of slaves, or strategic control of mechanoids, is often the role of Cephalopod command units. Especially trained to deploy their units ahead of themselves and to monitor and direct the progress of missions. When subjugating lesser species the hard suits of the science caste are often not required by these units.

Steam Wars – Sanwar Slave Infantry

With 2 weeks to go before we play our first game of Steam Wars, in what seems like ages, I have managed to finish off some of the troops that are planned for use in the force.  I have a number of Sanwar troopers to use as Humanoid slave infantry in the Martian force.  The two units below are my effort to start painting them. I have to say they came out as good as I would have liked and in half the time I expected.

These are the low tech end of the Martian force. Why would the Martian Cephalopods share any technology with their slaves… Nutrino rifles and blast guns will do for these guys.  Most of them are armed with short range weapons, but if they get in range, they should be pretty lethal.

Even shorter range are these close combat slaves.  Clubs and little else.  Two of these chaps do have blast guns but after they have charged its all about the grunting and blood splatter.

This puts me well on track to get the army painted for when we plan to play.
